Until recently, the culture has been considered the "gold standard" in identifying both chlamydial and gonococcal infection. A culture would consist of rubbing a suspected infected area with a swab and try to grow the chlamydia or gonorrhea bacteria in a special solution. A culture for chlamydia and gonorrhea may have low accuracy because the chlamydia and gonorrhea bacteria may be hard to grow in the solution.
